We have been telling a lot of people recently about traveling the world and a lot of their responses are usually, that is awesome! Here are some of the other responses we have gotten.
During a fundraiser event from a member of a “Mercedes club”: Europe is going bankrupt and nobody has any jobs. I don’t want to go back.
Sitting in a bar after a wedding talking to an acquaintance: What will you do for stimulation? (I was thoroughly confused with that one)
Co-worker: So you will be with your husband all the time every day for a year?
Co-worker: I don’t think I have ever heard of someone doing that. Won’t it be hard to come back and work again?
Family: What are you going to do about insurance?
Friend: Isn’t Africa dangerous?
When going to best buy and the apple store we got exactly the same reaction which was funny. We describe what we are doing…doing a lot of traveling, want light weight, enough processor speed to handle video and photo editing…blah blah blah.
Well sir, why do you need it to be so light.
Finally come across saying well we will be traveling for a little over a year so we will be carrying it in a backpack, so we need lightweight.
Ohhhh, where are you going?
We are going around the world.
Ohhh WOW…(completely blank face for a few seconds, combination of being bewildered and first time he has heard of this concept), well I have to admit I’m pretty jealous…Wow.
Some of these reactions were pretty comical while some were genuine concerns. First of all don’t let fear about other countries dictate your mindset if you have never been there. Don’t let other peoples rumors be your truth. A lot of peoples responses are that they have worked a long time to get to where they are. It seems to be a popular trend that everyone feels tied to their job. Don’t think that quitting your job is impossible. I am pretty positive you can find work on the way or when you get back. I think there just needs to be a change in mindset to start thinking differently about life and work. Instead of prioritizing work and wanting more, prioritize life and do more. Don’t be fearful, just go. It will work out in the end.
